Co-workers use defibrillator to save employee
Chili, N.Y. – 58-year-old Steve Hamlin doesn’t remember having a heart attack on the job at Sydor Optics in Chili but it was all captured on video cameras in the ceiling of the plant.
The video show Steve falling off his chair to the floor. Workers then rush to his side, cutting his shirt off, performing CPR and then activating the defibrillator they had never used before.
They were also on the phone with 911, the operator guiding them and telling them steps they had already taken to help Steve Hamlin.
By the time the ambulance arrived, Hamlin was alert and breathing. He said he didn’t need to go to the hospital but was taken there and had surgery. Steve is back to work and thankful for his co-workers and the defibrillator company owner Jim Sydor invested in four years ago.
Sydor credits a worker who has since retired. He urged him to get the machine. And after it was used to save Steve’s life, Jim Sydor emailed that employee to tell him he helped save a life.
